The Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA) is a contemporary art museum located in the Silo District at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town, South Africa. It is the largest museum of gimmicky African art in the world.[1]

The museum opened on September 22, 2017.[2]

Inception and development [edit]

The public not-for-turn a profit museum was commissioned through a public/private partnership between the 5&A Waterfront and German businessman Jochen Zeitz.[three] The Waterfront invested more than than R500 million towards its construction and infrastructure development, and although not a shareholder, Zeitz has loaned his all-encompassing art collection for his lifetime.[3] Considered by many to exist one of the globe'south leading collections of contemporary fine art from Africa and its Diaspora,[i] Zeitz's collection includes works by such eminent artists as Chris Ofili, Kudzanai Chiurai, Kehinde Wiley, Glenn Ligon, Marlene Dumas, Wangechi Mutu, and Julie Mehretu.[three]

The Waterfront had been investigating a number of proposals regarding what to do with the historic Grain Silo since information technology was decommissioned in 2001.[3] According to CEO David Green, the decision to transform and renovate the building for the new museum would "breathe life into the Silo district and act as a draw bill of fare to a venture that is non-commercial in nature ... specifically for the enjoyment of all the continent's citizens".[4] While others take noted that the strategic partnership with Zeitz besides serves to connect the existing properties of the Waterfronts's owners (Growthpoint Properties and the Authorities Employees Pension Fund) with the developing financial commune in Cape Town's lower CBD.[three] The conversion of the Silo edifice began in 2014 nether the direction of London-based designer, Thomas Heatherwick.[3]

Location and architecture [edit]

The museum is located in the Silo Commune at the 5&A Waterfront, on the banks of Tabular array Bay overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The Waterfront is considered a prestigious retail and hospitality property, and receives around 24-million local and international visitors per year.[iv]

The museum building was synthetic from the conversion of the 57m tall historic Grain Silo, originally built in 1921 and decommissioned in 2001.[3] The architects, Heatherwick Studio, aimed to conserve and celebrate the original structure's industrial heritage, while simultaneously excavating big open spaces from the 42 densely-packed concrete cylinders from which it was comprised.[5] Using a diverseness of concrete-cutting techniques, the interior of the building was carved out to create a number of galleries and a large central atrium.[five] Disagreements betwixt the architects and director Mark Coetzee over the number of galleries that the museum had to contain ended in what S African art critic Sean O'Toole has described equally "poky, depression-ceilinged galleries, which often struggle to hold or reflect the appetite of the exhibiting artists".[6] The remaining concrete shafts were capped with strengthened glass in order to let natural light to enter and create a "cathedral-like" interior.[5] From the exterior, the most noticeable change to the original structure was the addition of pillowed drinking glass panels in the building's upper floors.[5]

Overall the ix,500sqm complex consists of nine floors with half dozen,000sqm of dedicated white cube exhibition space.[four] Additionally in that location are xviii educational areas included on one floor, a sculpture garden on the lower office of the roof, equally well as a cafe, eatery and shop.[7] The college function of the building operates every bit The Silo Hotel, which opened its doors in March 2017.[8]

The building made it onto the Imperial Institute of British Architects (RIBA) International List 2018.[9]

Leadership [edit]

Zeitz MOCAA is a registered public do good system.

The museum's founding Executive Director and Chief Curator was Marking Coetzee.[10] Coetzee resigned from the post in May 2018 following an inquiry into his professional conduct.[11] [6]
